Keep Your New Computer Acting New

You finally refreshed your old system and now you want to make sure you keep your new computer running like the first day you purchased it-virus free, fast and efficient. What can you do?

To keep your computer acting new for as long as possible, there are a few steps one must take.

  1. Remove the bells and the whistles. If you bought your computer at a big-box store, then more than likely your computer has come with a lot of extra, excuse the term, junk on it. All of these extra bells and whistles includes installation tools, trials and a whole array of junk software that you will probably never use. Remove all of it asap! These extras are only taking up space and resources.
  2. Install Antivirus and anti-malware- This step should be one of the first things you do after unwrapping your brand new system. Remember, viruses and outbreaks get worse as time goes on and many times, end users do not even notice them until their computer is unusable. This might be obvious for some of you, but make sure that there is only one antivirus software program on your computer.
  3. Regular maintenance- Set up Disk Cleanup and Defragmenter to occur at regularly scheduled intervals. Also, set up both your antivirus and anti-malware for regularly scheduled scans and daily updates.
  4. Disable unnecessary services- Windows machines have plenty of services that are simply not needed. No matter what the PC is used for, you will find unnecessary services running. However, make sure you know what a service is and does before you disable it.
  5. Turn off Aero- If your computer is already sluggish, it could mean it barely has the resources to run everything necessary. You can give it a bit of a boost by turning off the Aero feature. This will disable all of the fancier GUI elements of the OS but give you back some speed.
