Microsoft Core Infrastructure
Optimization Assessment Tool
While most executives realize
that technology is crucial to the running and ultimate success of
their businesses, many will admit that the state of their IT systems is
less than optimal. Microsoft offers guidance through the Infrastructure
Optimization Model, which outlines steps companies can take to analyze
where they are today and to plan for and create an IT environment that is
well managed, secure and efficient. Click on the model to learn more...

The Virtualization Revolution
PC Professional has recently
become a Virtual Infrastructure Partner with VMware, the world's leading
provider of virtualization solutions for x86-based servers and desktops.
Opposed to today's computer hardware capable of running only a single
operating system and a single application, virtualization makes it possible
to run multiple operating systems and multiple applications on the same
computer simultaneously. Virtualization has quickly become a revolutionary
new technology that will drastically change the IT landscape offering
significant improvements in efficiency, availability and management.
In basic terms, it turns software into
hardware thus increasing its utilization and flexibility. For example,
running a VMware ESX Server would "virtualize" the hardware
resources including CPU, RAM, hard disk and the network controller. The
approach VMware used to achieve this involves inserting a thin layer of
software on a host operating system. This software layer contains a
"hypervisor" or virtual machine monitor that reallocates the
hardware resources- either for one computer or an entire infrastructure.
The sharing of these resources is what makes simultaneous virtualization
possible without cross interference.
Virtualization is quickly being utilized
across all industries for its vast benefits. The simple fact that less
servers are needed reduces energy costs for power and cooling
significantly; about $500-$600 per server per year. In addition to energy
savings, the benefits include improved desktop manageability and security,
increased application availability, improved operational flexibility and
responsiveness, physical infrastructure cost reduction and server
consolidation and infrastructure optimization.

PC Professional Becomes a VMware
Virtual Infrastructure Partner
PC Professional is proud to announce our new partnership with VMware-
the leader in developing Virtual Infrastructure Solutions for organziations
of all sizes.
VMware has made it possible to fully
realize the enormous benefits of virtualization in production- scale IT
environments by building virtual infrastructure automation and management
capabilities around a best-in-class hypervisor. In fact, 86% of VMware
customers use virtualization in production and 43% deploy most new
production applications in virtual machines.
VMware virtual infrastructure solutions
are ideal for production environments in part because they run on
industry-standard servers and desktops and support a wide range of
operating system and application environments, as well as networking and
storage infrastructure. We have designed our solutions to function
independently of the hardware and operating system to provide customers
with a broad platform choice. As a result, our solutions provide a key
integration point for hardware and infrastructure management vendors to
deliver differentiated value that can be applied uniformly across all
application and operating system environments.

IN THE NEWS
"Neil Pearlstein, executive vice
president of sales and marketing at Oakland, Calif.- based solution
provider PC Professional, says those who install the Vista service pack
beta are treading on dangerous ground. 'I'd never recommend that any client
implement a beta release of a software package, software upgrade, or
software patch in a live environment unless the install is in conjunction
with an authorized partner with the cooperation of the manufacturer,' said
Pearlstein."
