Windows 7: Is it the Right Operating System for Your Business?

Seven Wonders of Windows 7

  • Onboard PowerShell Version 2.0

    • IT managers can use PowerShell commands to monitor or maintain systems, collect data, run scripts, distribute necessary updates and enforce changes uniformly on multiple systems

    • One of the coolest features is that remote users don’t even know a command is running – unlike Remote Desktop which takes over the system

  • App Locker

    • IT managers can create rules and exceptions with a simple slider that allows them to dial up or down the level of network control

  • The Action Center

    • The Action Center is a combination of both security and maintenance information as well as configuration options

    • The user not only sees security statistics such as virus protection, malware protection and updates, but also maintenance status including backups and available drivers

  • Problem-Steps Recorder

    • A .ZIP file with a MHTML report of step-by-step actions and screenshots the user took to be sent to the IT manager who can diagnose the problem when he has the time

  • Networking Enhancements

    • DirectAccess (DA) is nearly invisible virtual private network (VPN) connection that’s created as needed and will allow the client to connect to the Internet, company intranet and a local network

  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

    • Ties the various remote desktop and virtual desktop features together in a more integrated fashion so that there is a single icon on the user’s local desktop for the remote application

  • Windows Explorer Enhancements

    • With the current rate of desktop data sprawl, Microsoft has created a library function to make it easier to sift through documents, music, pictures and videos across multiple sources

GUI Goodies in Windows 7

  • Aero Snap: grab the title bar of a window and drag it to the side of the screen.  When the cursor hits the screen edge on the right side of the screen it will snap to that half of the screen

  • Aero Peak: click the show desktop icon and it hides the windows but shows an outline of them

  • Aero Shake:  grab the title bar of any active window and jiggle it back and forth a couple of times and all the other windows will disappear by minimizing, shake again and they will all reappear

  • Alt-Tab: shows a preview of the app not just the name

  • Recently Used List: each app maintains its own list, so it provides a longer list of recent docs

  • Libraries: now there are libraries folder that includes subfolders to easily sift through all your documents across multiple directories

  • Customizable Task Bar and Notification Area: you can move icons to different positions on the task bar and add or remove icons in the notification area

  • BitLocker: make it easy to protect USB jump drives – just right-click on the driver’s icon and you can encrypt the drive
